Chapter Fifteen

The rain was a reprieve, but of course it didn’t last forever. When her cousin Robert called to accompany her on a walk on this cloudless, warm day, his companion was the young lady Olivia had teased him about, which rather negated his claim he was not seriously interested. He’d apparently only gotten permission to take her out for an afternoon with an assurance to her parents his very respectable cousin would be with them.

Olivia was fairly sure he left out the fact that the scandalous Lord Breton’s younger brother would also be there.

“This looks rather like collusion to me,” she murmured to Jonas. “I cannot see how my cousin is any form of a chaperone when he isn’t even actually walking with us.”

“In the strictest sense, you are chaperones for each other.” Jonas gave her an irreverent but infectious smile. “His young lady is able to walk with him because you are here, and he is present to assure my gallant behavior. Quite a brilliant arrangement if I do say so.”

She regarded Robert’s tall form, his attention absorbed in the attractive Miss Sanderson, who flirtatiously clung to his arm as they walked at least ten paces ahead. “He would have to have eyes in the back of his head to actually see what we are doing.”

“I’m afraid we are the responsible ones on this outing.”

At that she laughed. “And just how often are you described that way?”

“I run the family shipping company,” he said in an off-hand way. “Julius has to deal with the estates, so it fell to me. I had been in Spain before my father’s death, but upon my return home, I realized quickly my older brother couldn’t do everything. He’s too busy as it is. I assure you it involves quite a bit of responsibility and on the whole, I enjoy it.”

She had assumed he was like so many young blades in society who relied on their inheritances and spent their time in pursuit of pleasure. “My apologies. I didn’t mean to insult you.”

“No offense taken but whatever your perception of me is thanks to the rumor mill, keep in mind whatever you’ve heard might not be accurate. For that matter, Julius is not half as rakish as he is portrayed. I am not saying he’s a saint, but for some reason the gossips seem to be inordinately fond of whispering about him.”

Having recently met Lord Breton, Olivia thought she could explain exactly why he generated such interest. “He’s young, titled, wealthy by all accounts, and strikingly handsome,” she pointed out, for once carrying her parasol the way she should, overhead to protect her complexion. Usually she preferred to feel the warmth of the sun on her skin. “Of course they are paying attention to his every move, especially if he gives them reason.”

Jonas’s mouth quirked into that devil-may-care grin again. “You think he’s handsome? Ah, progress at last.”

She’d fallen quite neatly into that trap, but then again it was of her own making.
